Family Literacy Day
We celebrate Family Literacy Day every January 27 and this year marks the 25th anniversary of this important initiative.
But what is family literacy? ABC Life Literacy Canada says “family literacy focuses on parents, grandparents and other family members to improve the reading and writing skills of the whole family.” You can learn more about family literacy and see some stats on their website here.
To celebrate this year’s Family Literacy Day, we put together a list of just a few middle grade fiction titles that are great for families to read aloud together. By reading these books as a family, children get to experience stories they may not be able to read on their own yet and caregivers have the chance to experience new stories, grow their own literacy skills, and create new or stronger family bonds.
We’ve included some audiobooks in this list too. This is a great way to enjoy books together as a family while doing quiet activities (like puzzles or craft projects) or on road trips.
