Transportation and storage instructions

To prevent the lyre from getting scuffed, chipped, and bumped around, always transport the instrument in its carrying bag. In fact, when you’re not playing the lyre, it’s better to keep it in the bag just to be safe!

Do not store the instrument in very cold or very hot environments. You must also keep it away from the following: direct sunlight, heaters or radiators and A/C units.

Do not leave the lyre in a hot, humid car or outside on a snowy or wet ground. This kind of treatment will damage the sound of a lyre and warp the wooden components.

If bringing the lyre inside from the cold, let it warm up to inside room temperature before playing. This will help ensure the best possible sound.

Care instructions

To wipe down the lyre, ensure that you use a soft, dry, microfibre, lint-free cloth. This will help pick up any dust and/or oils that may have accumulated on the body and strings.

Do not polish the body. Staff at the library will take care of this!

Do not use any household or personal cleaning products on the lyre, including but not limited to:

  • soap

  • hand sanitizer

  • liquid disinfectant

  • disinfecting wipes

  • multi-purpose cleaners

  • alcohol
